Formula
Post spacing of 2.5 m (8 ft) matches standard panels. Each post footing takes about 2 bags of 25 kg (50 lb) post-mix concrete in a 30 × 30 × 60 cm (12 × 12 × 24 in) hole. Rails: 2 per section for fences up to 1.8 m (6 ft), 3 for taller.
How to measure
- Measure the fence line in straight runs between corners — measure each run separately if the line turns.
- Check the boundary before digging: a fence 10 cm onto a neighbour’s land is a dispute waiting to happen.
- Call utility location services before digging post holes.

- Set corner and gate posts first, then stretch a string line for the rest.
- Bury posts at least 60 cm (2 ft) deep — one third of the post height for tall fences.
- Slope the concrete footing top away from the post so water runs off, not into the wood.
- Treat cut ends of timber posts with preservative before setting.
Waste allowance
Posts and panels are counted exactly. Add one spare panel and 2–3 extra bags of concrete for broken bags and deeper-than-planned holes.

Common mistakes
- 1 Forgetting the +1 post: 10 sections always need 11 posts, plus extras for gates.
- 2 Shallow footings: posts buried 30 cm lean within a year in wind or frost.
- 3 Setting posts in soil only — concrete footings double the fence lifespan.
- 4 Ignoring slope: on sloped ground, stepped panels need longer posts at the downhill side.

At 2.5 m spacing: 30 ÷ 2.5 = 12 sections, so 13 posts, plus one extra per gate. Order 14 for a fence with one gate.
